Amposta is the capital of the Montsià region, the southernmost county of Catalonia. Located on the right bank of the Ebro River, at the point where the coastal line and the Ebro Delta meet, the municipal area includes the towns of Balada and Poble Nou del Delta, as well as the residential areas of Eucaliptus and Favaret.

The city serves as a commercial and service center for the Montsià county and other towns outside the region.
Amposta is one of the municipalities that forms part of the Terres de l’Ebre region, which includes the counties of Montsià, Baix Ebre, Ribera d’Ebre, and Terra Alta. The Terres de l’Ebre area is especially known for its natural spaces, including the Ebro Delta Natural Park and the Ports Natural Park, as well as a nature reserve and 19 other protected areas, all under the Natura 2000 network.
